Soleil is by far our best LGD. She was quick to mature and is highly devoted to the Flerd (having a bond with each individual animal). She is always alert, gentle with her charges and good with people too. Even though she is 3/4 Great Pyrenees she is not a roamer and prefers to stay close to her charges. Her Anatolian Shepherd comes out in the shorter coat which is more adapted to our hot Texas climate. She has taken her turn guarding poultry and performed wonderfully but she loves the cattle, sheep, and goats the most.

Sir is owned by a friend of the Farm but has been with Soleil to be trained with older LGDs. He comes from a working line. He is intelligent and curious, has a ferocious bark but is submissive to people. He has been trained on sheep and cattle. His Maremmano-Abruzzese Sheepdog heritage makes him an “intentional barker” he barks only when he needs to.

The Puppies are a Great Pyrenees (37.5%), Maremmano-Abruzzese Sheepdog (25%), Anatolian Shepherd (12.5%), Akbash (12.5%), & Kangal Shepherd Dog (12.5%) mix. They are 100% working Livestock Guardian Dogs! This unique mix allows our pups to benefit from what is known as heterosis or “hybrid vigor.” This is where the best traits from both parents combine to create a healthier and less disease prone offspring. A 2013 study published in a veterinary journal found that crossbred dogs had significantly greater lifespan than purebred dogs. While genetically beneficial traits that lend towards health and well-being of the dog get passed on from each parent the flip-side of having a mixed breed is that the breed specific tendencies can’t be predicted. We know they will be great LGDs but you get to discover their unique tendencies as your train them for your specific context.

Each LGD breed has nuanced behavioral differences that have been bred into them for millennia. For instance, Great Pyrenees were bred in the wide open mountain ranges without fences so they had to roam and setup their own boundaries. They let potential predators know to stay away through constant “territorial barking.” Whereas the Maremmano-Abruzzese Sheepdogs were developed in closer connection to people and towns so they are “intentional barkers” (barking only when a threat is identified). While our pups have all the LGD instincts they need to protect your livestock and family it is hard to predict the pup’s nuanced guarding behavior because of the different breed combinations. While we can make an educated guess based on their behavior as puppies we can not guarantee any particular trait.

That being said we can guarantee that these puppies, given the right training, will be excellent LGDs. They have been raised with sheep and miniature cattle since they were born and by the time they leave the farm to your place will have had an opportunity to learn alongside mom during spring lambing season.

We sell our puppies once they wean at around 9-10 weeks. We love to provide guidance and tips but it is up to you to train them to your context. We offer free zoom or over the phone consulting. For a fee we can provide a farm/homestead specific site visit consult. Please note that it takes time to train a LGD puppy and they progress through several phases as they mature. It can take 2 years for some LGDs to fully come into their own. For an additional fee we can train your puppies but this is on a case by case basis as we want to ensure we have the ability to train for your specific needs and goals.
